The elementary-age kids presented a choreography at church on Mother´s Day. Josue shared a wonderful message on a Mother´s Love. At the end, he asked all the children to come forward to commit to love their moms better. It was a precious service. The pastors gave away some food baskets and the youth provided a nice meal.

My friend Cory Cummings from the US is in town and last night, he shared with our church on letting God realize the dreams He’s put in our hearts. He then prayed for anyone who had a dream and needed help from God to realize it. Several families came forward; 3 youth responded to a call to missions; and 1 of our Club kids, 8-year-old Natali, confessed disobedience to her mom and asked for prayer for a changed heart—she was crying and some of the other kids gathered around her to pray for her—sweet!

It was a joy to see our church members and Club families seeking God. It was sad to hear stories of lost dreams. Our families need your prayers; they need God’s help to become more like Him and become the people He wants them to be.

The elementary class consists of 25 active and sweet 8-10 year olds. Each month, I teach one Bible story. We are currently studying Elijah´s passing on a “double portion of his spirit” to Elisha. As he is taken into Heaven in a chariot of fire, his cloak falls below. Elisha uses it to open the Jordan River just as Elijah had, pleading to God for His power. The river opens, and Elisha realizes that God is with him. He goes forth, and God works miracles through him. Some miracles are spectacular and others are more ordinary. In the same way, God does amazing miracles for us, but He also provides us with daily wonders, that we must be aware of or we´ll miss them–sunshine, friendships, safety, books, a surprise, a hug, a rainshower–these are God´s gifts to us!

Josue, Mama Luz, and I, with other family and friends, went to visit families in our Club that have been affected the worst by the flood. These were the ones who received the food baskets (see next blog entry).

The second photo is the back of my neice Greysi and nephew Jahasiel´s house, normally quite far from the river. The third photo is Oscar´s front porch. You can see water up to the roofs of some houses. And a barge navigating down the normally narrow river.

On Thursday, at the School for Parents, we handed out 11 food baskets to families who live near the flooding. 9 families live in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Iquitos, 3 blocks from our house, called “Invasion” (because the residents started out as squatters; the area has one water spigot  for a hundred homes, which are made of dirt floors, plywood walls, and tin roofs, and nailed together haphazardly). The other 2 families (Treicy and Jhosmeri) live in a village on the water´s edge 30 minutes away.

Thanks to donations, we were able to help 10 needy families—they are very grateful!  We provided weeks’ worth of rice, pasta noodles, cooking oil, salt, sugar, milk, crackers, matches, eggs, drink mix, and spices. The “basket” was a cooking pot!

Please pray for these families who are living at water’s edge for their safety and comfort in this difficult time. The good news is that water has begun to recede, although it will be another 2 months before the flooded homes will be habitable.

Stickers, hairbands, erasers, pencils and pencil sharpeners–all kinds of treats! Our kids love to receive small packages with letters and little gifts to remind them that their sponsor is praying for them and thinking about them.
